SUSTAINING THE ITF DREAM
So, what happens when your dreams are actualized? Do you develop new dreams? Do you become happy and content with what you have at the moment? Or do you take that original dream, nurture it, and expand it beyond what you once imagined? For ITF, the answer is simple: grow it. While dreaming is effortless and achieving is demanding, the true test lies in long-term sustainability: how to live in your dream. ITF challenged itself to branch out not only from its country of origin but from the continent too. And through the unwavering dedication and hard work of its team, this became a reality, and we got to open our office in the USA and expand our footprint into Europe. That expansion was by no means easy. Yet once the doors are open, a new reality sets in: managing operations, driving local activities, securing funding, and empowering new teams. That is where the ultimate challenge lay all along: learning how to sustain, nurture, and maintain the dream as it continues to grow.
The International Transformation Foundation in the United States (ITF-USA) was registered as a non-profit organization in Houston, Texas, in 2022. Operating independently while collaborating closely with its international secretariat and African branches, ITF USA carries a two-fold mission: mobilizing resources to provide clean, affordable drinking water to communities in Africa and providing American youth with work-based learning, cross-cultural volunteering, and leadership development opportunities. Its key fundraising and awareness initiatives support core programs such as the Water Kiosk at School and Public Drinking Tap Water Fountains. Additionally, ITF USA actively recruits U.S.-based volunteers and directors for roles in grant acquisition, donor stewardship, and international project coordination, while offering cultural exchange trips to Africa for supporters and volunteers.
While ITF’s main operational headquarters is situated in Kenya, East Africa, ITF Europe functions primarily as a regional branch and collaborative bridge for international partnerships, institutional capacity building, and cross-border youth initiatives. Rather than running standalone local infrastructure projects, ITF Europe engages with European non-profits, foundations, and educational networks, such as organizations in Spain, Poland, Germany, Italy, Croatia, and the Czech Republic, to execute collaborative projects supported by global and EU youth frameworks. These partnerships focus on joint initiatives in social entrepreneurship, comparative policy research, digital skills development, and anti-violence awareness through creative media.
Although ITF’s individual branches operate mostly independently on a day-to-day basis, the foundation frequently unites these regional arms for cross-border joint initiatives that span from initial planning and fundraising all the way to project execution and launch. A prime example of this global collaboration was the Muhanga Public Water Fountain Project in Rwanda, officially launched on July 31, 2026. Spearheaded through the combined efforts of ITF Kenya, Rwanda, USA, and Europe and implemented in partnership with the Join The Pipe Foundation and Muhanga District’s mayor's office in the southern province of Rwanda, the project brought together international youth volunteers and local stakeholders to construct a vandal-resistant, auto-stop public water fountain in the high-traffic city of Muhanga. While ITF Europe and ITF USA mobilized international volunteer support and cross-border fundraising campaigns, ITF Kenya provided operational experience and technical guidance, and ITF Rwanda managed ground installation, site selection with local municipal authorities, and community engagement. By offering reliable, free access to clean tap water and distributing reusable water bottles, this unified effort not only alleviates water scarcity for hundreds of residents daily but also actively reduces single-use plastic waste across the district.
Beyond the practical impact of infrastructure development, cross-border initiatives like the Muhanga District water fountain project in Rwanda offer a profoundly transformative cultural immersion for everyone involved. For international volunteers traveling from Europe and the USA, the journey begins the moment they arrive: navigating new geographical landscapes, adapting to regional rhythms, and embracing the vibrant atmosphere of East Africa. Beyond the project site, this joint effort extends into everyday life: sharing traditional Rwandan meals and fresh regional produce, while exploring historic sites and the country's breathtaking natural landscapes. Working side by side with local municipal authorities, community leaders, and resident teams creates a dynamic environment for cross-cultural dialogue, mutual learning, and shared problem-solving. Navigating regional nuances and witnessing community-driven priorities firsthand cultivates deep respect for local heritage and civic perspectives. Ultimately, these joint activities transform technical execution into an unforgettable cultural exchange, building lasting global connections and ensuring project outcomes remain genuinely rooted in the lived experiences and spirit of the local population.
Although these milestones are certainly worth celebrating, we remain conscious of the work that still lies ahead. Our vision is ambitious, our team is determined, and the resources are in place; we remain confident that ITF will expand its reach globally, bringing meaningful transformation to more communities around the world.
