Prior to the construction of a Water Kiosk at School at Peresten, the school depended on one water source - Kang’aanga tank - which is located about 2.7 kilometers away. This tank is the main water source serving the Cheptais area, which has about 10,000 community residents. However, community residents can only access it for a regulated period of time. Due to the limited water supply at the tank, they are not able to fetch water beyond 12noon for rationing purposes. The water pump switches off at 12noon until the next day. Therefore, students have to walk to and from the water source, competing with other community residents to fetch water and carry it on their heads or backs, thereby exposing them to a multitude of dangers.

Aside from the water problem, the school faces a number of other challenges, such as a lack of adequate classroom facilities to accommodate all of their students, in addition to a lack of proper toilet and other hygiene facilities, particularly for male students at the school. The previous toilet facility collapsed, leading to the current male student body sharing toilets with the teachers. Therefore, the funds generated from the newly constructed water kiosk will be beneficial in helping them fund the construction and maintenance of essential school facilities.

During the signing of the agreement conducted in February 2020, members of the community and the school were briefed on how the water kiosk is expected to be run sustainably with a core emphasis on accountability, with respect to the collection of generated income and proper maintenance of the kiosk so that it serves the community for many years to come.
