The school was built by the Norwegian government under church sponsorship in 1982. It was started the same year as a church nursery but later grew into a big school, expanding from 1 classroom with 40 pupils and 2 teachers to 12 classrooms with 477 pupils and 18 teachers.

Through a collaboration with Imani Initiative Group, located in Oyugis, ITF was able to sign up Agawo Primary School for the JTP Water kiosk. The school faces a severe water problem since it relies on rainwater from roofs channeled into storage tanks that are not well maintained. The nearest stream is 2.5 to 3 kilometers away, and the water there is dirty and untreated. The school has 477 pupils, who previously had to fetch water every morning and evening from the stream, both for use at school and for home use.
